Internship Pro Tip

Woof! It's been awhile since there's been a post on here huh? The Captivated By Child Life mentoring program has been taking up a TON of time, but that's an awesome thing! We are excited that we have over 30 students who have or currently are enrolled in our program! But, to get to the pint today... it's August which means fall internships are starting! The following is a short list of tips from the pros to help your internship be a success! Did you receive a pro tip during your internship? Share it with us so we can let others know your great advice!

PRO TIPS:

1.) Get a blank journal prior to the start of your internship and then FILL it! During your internship you are going to have so many opportunities for learning! It will stink to get to the end of the internship whirlwind and not be able to recall all of it, so write it down! I had lots of supplemental education/module sessions with my coordinator and took notes during our conversations! Since completing internship and becoming a professional I have taken this same journal to conference sessions and out of work experiences so I can pull things from it at work.

2.) Ask questions... lots of them! An internship is your time of hands on learning and you will have multiple CCLSs on hand to ask questions to! Utilize the wealth of knowledge around you and ask questions. Whether it be about a current experience, things you are wondering about the job of a CCLS in a specific unit, or just things you have discovered and you want to hear another viewpoint; ask away!

3.) Know your time in an internship is limited. This is maybe some of the best advice to remember throughout one's internship. It is tough to move away from friends and family, to be alone in an unknown area, or to be thrust into the work and not have someone else to chat about it with. But, it's temporary! Don't let an unfortunate roommate/housing situation spill over into your internship time and tank your experience. Don't let homesickness prevent you from finishing and taking away great knowledge. An internship is four months. You can be tough for four months and then move somewhere else, go home, take a break, whatever it is you need to do. But, don't take away such a wonderful opportunity for yourself that you worked extremely hard for. YOU were picked for a reason above others! YOU are highly capable!

Good luck to all the interns this Fall!
