Non-Profit Profile: Give Kids The World

There are lots of reviews out there that say Disney World is the most magical place on earth. I have a strong argument against this sentiment and believe that Give Kids The World TRUELY is the most magical place on earth. If you haven't heard about this amazing place yet I am about to enlighten the heck out of you. I had the pleasure of visiting this non-profit resort a few summers ago and can absolutely say that it was one of the best trips I have taken. Their slogan "Where Happiness Inspires Hope" is truly the antithesis of everything that goes on in the Village.

This resort is where wish children visiting the Orlando area attractions stay, free of charge of course, for their week long wish trip. The story behind Give Kids The World is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, I encourage you to check it out and learn more about the founder, Henri Landwirth, at gktw.org. Everything in the Village is centered around the children whom are the guests of honor. Honestly, I can say that volunteering at this place was a child life dream and I would go back in a heartbeat if I could. Each night of the week is a different theme to celebrate some of the holidays or events that critically ill children might not have had the opportunity to experience yet. During my visit I was able to play life-size Candy Land, celebrate Christmas with Santa, go trick-or-treating for Halloween, and watch a movie shown on the sail of a pirate ship... can't say any of that about Disney World can you?

Beyond all the fun extras though, GKTW Village is a place where families go and they have the opportunity to be just like everyone else. The only families that are at the resort are other families who have ill children or alumni families coming back for a quick "Hi." If you are a Child Life Specialist who works closely with a wish granting organization I highly suggest you take some extra time to learn more about Give Kids The World, my knowledge of it has helped me numerous times in my work already. And, if you get the chance.. volunteering there will both fulfill you in a way that no other place has and provide you with an extremely fun time.
