Falling with Style

Updated: Jul 1, 2018

Remember the part in Toy Story where Buzzlightyear is sailing around Andy's room after being jettisoned off a Hotwheels ramp? Buzzlightyear truly believes he's flying and Woody is pissed off at not being number 1 in the toy box anymore and says "Thats not flying, it's falling with style." Thats what facing a new challenge is like for me. I start off thinking that I AM FLYING, only to come to the horrible realization that I'm actually just falling with style.

I'm 100% a type A person, which is why it's good that I have type B people around me to remind me every so often that I can take a chill pill. When it comes to facing challenges or new things though, I struggle to keep my type A-ness under control. I very much like to keep things organized and I have an affinity for wanting things to be "perfect." However, as with any challenge or new thing, perfection is rare. I've recently had to learn a lot about persistence and to let go of some of my desire for perfection.. as hard as that is for me.

It's important to give yourself some leeway, you're in the midst of learning or doing something unfamiliar to you. When a child is learning to walk there are lots of falls and points of failure, but with a little help and encouragement the child eventually surpasses walking and begins to run. I find it tough to be gentle with myself in the same way one would be gentle with a child though. My greatest failing is not allowing myself to be okay in the moment of failure. I'm learning to be okay with falling with style... it definitely helps to be surrounded by people who note that your falling, but only pay attention to how great you look doing it and support you in the end.

So here is to many more attempts at things in life. To continue to fall with style and getting back up again.
